Wabtec Research Note: Strong Rail Execution Faces an Earnings Quality Test

Wabtec WAB research graphic with a stylized locomotive, second-quarter sales growth, GAAP and adjusted operating margins, multi-year backlog, and the October 21 earnings-quality evidence check.

Wabtec enters its October 21 update with a strong operating baseline and a higher bar for evidence. Second-quarter sales rose 17.5% to $3.18 billion, while both Freight and Transit grew at double-digit rates. GAAP operating margin reached 18.9%, and adjusted operating margin reached 21.9%. That combination makes the next report less about whether momentum exists and more about how broadly and cleanly it is converting.

Backlog and cash generation add depth, but each needs context. Multi-year backlog stood at $30.93 billion, and second-quarter cash from operations was $441 million, more than double the prior-year quarter. Backlog can be delayed or canceled, while $6.57 billion of debt exceeded $0.66 billion of cash and equivalents at June 30. The next update can clarify conversion timing, funding discipline and whether operating gains are translating into balance-sheet progress.

Growth quality is another central question. Acquisitions contributed to reported growth in Freight digital and Transit. That does not erase the quarter's breadth, but it increases the importance of separating acquired expansion from underlying demand. With aftermarket parts and services accounting for roughly 60% of 2025 sales, service activity and the installed base provide useful context for durability.

Valuation adds to the proof required. The October 13 close remained below the 50-day average and above the 200-day average, while the reported earnings and enterprise multiples reflected substantial expectations. The coming release therefore needs a coherent reading across sales quality, profitability, cash realization and backlog conversion rather than strength in only one measure.

Management raised its 2026 revenue and adjusted earnings ranges after the second quarter. The October 21 release can test those expectations against segment growth, margins, backlog, cash generation and debt. A consistent set of readings would strengthen the operating narrative; a split between sales growth and weaker conversion would make earnings quality the more important issue.
