United Rentals, Inc. approaches its October 21 third-quarter results with scale, improving activity and a sharper question about earnings quality. The company describes itself as the world's largest equipment rental business and estimated its North American market share at about 15% at the end of 2025. Second-quarter rental revenue rose 12.7%, while fleet productivity advanced 3.4%. Those figures support the growth case without resolving whether the added activity is converting cleanly into margin.

Second-quarter adjusted EBITDA was $2.056 billion at a 46.6% margin. That result included a $49 million gain from a business sale, and the margin declined 40 basis points when the gain was excluded. Specialty rental revenue grew 24.8% to $1.431 billion, while specialty rental gross margin fell 140 basis points to 44.4%. The contrast makes the next update less about headline expansion and more about recurring operating economics.

Balance-sheet and cash evidence provide another lens. Debt was $14.230 billion and cash was $112 million at June 30, while net leverage was 1.8 times and liquidity was $2.999 billion. The full-year free cash flow outlook remained $2.15 billion to $2.45 billion. Substantial liquidity reduces the immediacy of financial strain, but durable cash conversion still matters in a capital-intensive and cyclical business.

The October 21 release is scheduled after the market close, followed by a conference call at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on October 22. The most informative reading will connect total and rental revenue, fleet productivity, adjusted EBITDA margin, specialty mix, free cash flow, capital spending and full-year guidance. Commentary on large projects, customer backlogs, utilization, delivery costs, tariffs and fleet allocation can help explain whether growth and margins are moving together.
