Where the session stands: breadth, sectors, and what moved.

This is the CAMS Midday Market Check for Thursday, July 30.
At midday the headline numbers look strong, but the story underneath is narrower than it appears. The Nasdaq 100 is up about two and three quarters percent, the S&P 500 is up a little over one percent, the Dow is up about eight tenths, and the Russell 2000 is up three quarters of a percent.
Here is the catch. Inside the Dow, only nine stocks are higher while twenty-one are lower. And across the eleven sectors, just four are in the green. This is a session being carried largely by technology, which is up nearly five percent as a group. Microsoft alone is up about sixteen percent, and that one stock is doing a lot of the heavy lifting for the averages. Goldman Sachs and Boeing round out the Dow's leaders.
On the other side, the defensive corners of the market are red. Communications is down about three percent, consumer staples down roughly two and a half, and health care down close to two. Salesforce, Travelers, and Johnson and Johnson are the Dow's biggest decliners. So the character of the tape is a sharp rotation into big-cap technology and out of much of the rest of the market.
Volatility is easing alongside the headline strength. The VIX is down about twelve percent to just over eighteen.
The main event is still ahead. The Federal Reserve's rate decision lands this afternoon, and that announcement can reshape an intraday tape quickly, so the picture at the close may look different from the one at lunch.
