WM's third-quarter results presented a balanced operating picture. Revenue rose 6.3% to $6.846 billion and adjusted operating EBITDA increased 5.8% to $2.121 billion, yet adjusted margin eased to 31.0% from 31.1%. The figures show continued growth without a clean expansion in profitability.
Price remained a stronger contributor than volume in Collection and Disposal. Core price was 5.8% and yield was 3.4%, while volume declined 0.4%, or 0.5% on a workday-adjusted basis. That mix makes the quality and durability of growth central as operating costs evolve.
The pressure was visible in the cost bridge. Higher fuel expense and greater risk-management costs each reduced adjusted margin by 40 basis points. That drag helps explain why earnings growth trailed revenue growth even with strong pricing.
The latest release kept management's full-year adjusted operating EBITDA range intact and placed free cash flow at the high end of its existing range. That provides near-term support without resolving the durability of volume or costs.
Healthcare Solutions supplied an important offset. Segment revenue increased 3.7% and operating EBITDA grew more than 30%. The contrast between moderate revenue growth and much faster earnings growth points to cost improvement and synergy capture as meaningful parts of the broader story.
Cash generation was the strongest evidence. Through the first nine months, operating cash flow reached $4.87 billion, up 12.0%, and free cash flow, a non-GAAP measure, reached $3.01 billion from $2.11 billion. With $247 million in cash and $21.846 billion of long-term debt, less the current portion, consistent cash conversion remains important.
The public question is whether pricing, Healthcare Solutions and sustainability investments can continue absorbing soft volume and higher costs. The full WM premium review provides deeper context on the operating record, financial risks, market structure and questions for future reports.
