Rotation under the surface

Week of July 5, 2026 · Analysis as of July 5, 2026

Weekly thesis

The major indexes looked calm, but leadership changed sharply underneath them. The S&P 500 advanced 1.4% while the Nasdaq 100 slipped 0.5%. Health Care gained 12.3% over one month and Financials rose 8.5%, while Technology fell 8.8% despite remaining the three-month leader. The evidence supported a mixed regime: constructive index trends paired with defensive leadership.

Core view: Risk appetite had not disappeared; it had moved. Broad index strength remained intact, but sector and single-name confirmation mattered more than index direction alone.

Regime and breadth

All three major indexes stood above their 50- and 200-day averages, producing a trend score of 6 out of 6. The VIX was 16.1, near the 24th percentile of its trailing-year range, and 73% of sectors were above their 50-day averages. Those measures described a constructive trend backdrop.

The leadership map was less comfortable. Health Care, Financials, Utilities, and Staples led over one month, while Technology, Energy, and Communication Services lagged. Watchlist breadth was softer, with 13 of 20 names above their 50-day averages. A 10-year Treasury yield near 4.37%, down from 4.48% a month earlier, offered modest support but did not resolve the defensive rotation.

Leadership ledger

Sector 1 week 1 month 3 months Relative strength vs. SPY
Health Care +5.2% +12.3% +11.3% +5.7%
Financials +4.1% +8.5% +12.9% +4.5%
Industrials −0.1% +5.8% +12.1% +2.8%
Technology −2.2% −8.8% +34.0% +6.5%
Communication Services +3.8% −3.2% −1.2% −8.4%
Energy −1.6% −7.5% −9.1% −14.4%

Health Care and Financials were the only groups positive across all measured periods. Technology retained strong three-month leadership but had lost near-term momentum. Energy's weakness, alongside oil below $70 at the time of analysis, improved the cost backdrop for transports while confirming that the market was rewarding selectivity rather than broad cyclical exposure.

Thesis, confirmation, and invalidation map

Financial leadership

Thesis: Financials had broad multi-period strength, with JPMorgan leading the sector into bank earnings. Confirmation: stable or improving net-interest-income guidance, controlled credit costs, and sustained sector breadth. Invalidation: material deterioration in guidance or credit quality accompanied by a break in sector-relative strength.

Health Care leadership

Thesis: Health Care was the strongest one-month group, with Eli Lilly showing notable relative strength near its prior high. Confirmation: continued leadership with expanding volume and intact operating expectations. Invalidation: a persistent loss of intermediate trend support or a material weakening of business guidance.

Semiconductor divergence

Thesis: Taiwan Semiconductor showed relative resilience inside a weak near-term Technology tape. Confirmation: revenue growth holding near its recent pace, durable margins, and a recovery in semiconductor breadth. Invalidation: a material revenue or margin downgrade together with deterioration in the intermediate price trend.

Transport cost relief

Thesis: Lower energy prices improved the fuel-cost backdrop for airlines, with Delta entering its quarterly report near a 52-week high. Confirmation: evidence that lower fuel costs supported full-year operating expectations. Invalidation: operational disruption or guidance showing that cost relief was already absorbed elsewhere.

What would change the regime view

The mixed classification would strengthen toward risk-on if cyclical and growth leadership broadened while index trends remained intact. It would weaken if defensive leadership persisted alongside falling breadth, rising volatility, or breaks below intermediate index trends. The key question was not whether the indexes could remain elevated, but whether participation could expand beyond a narrowing set of leaders.
