Twilio approaches its October 29 third-quarter update with a stronger operating baseline and a clear expectations test. Second-quarter results combined faster activity, improving customer expansion, positive GAAP operating income and substantial free cash flow. The next release will show how much of that progress carries into a period for which official organic-growth guidance is slower.
Second-quarter revenue was $1.50 billion, up 22% year over year, while organic growth was 17%. Dollar-Based Net Expansion Rate reached 116%, compared with 108% a year earlier. Together, those figures show both broad top-line momentum and improved expansion within existing accounts. They also create a demanding comparison for the next update.
Profitability advanced alongside revenue. GAAP operating income was $84.5 million and non-GAAP operating income was $284.6 million. Free cash flow was $352.6 million, with a 24% margin. At June 30, cash and marketable securities totaled $2.66 billion, compared with $0.99 billion of long-term debt. That balance-sheet position provides context for continued investment and the existing share-repurchase authorization.
The central question is pacing. Official third-quarter guidance calls for 11% to 12% organic growth and $285 million to $295 million of non-GAAP operating income. The organic range is below the second-quarter rate. The October 29 result can clarify whether that deceleration reflects controlled normalization or a more material loss of momentum, while any update to full-year free-cash-flow guidance will help test the durability of cash conversion.
Several details deserve careful reading. Second-quarter diluted earnings included a $5.91 per-share non-cash tax benefit, making revenue, operating income and free cash flow cleaner measures of recurring progress. Dollar-Based Net Expansion Rate and the full-year outlook can also show whether customer expansion, profitability and cash conversion remain aligned.
