Republic Services Research Note: Pricing strength meets a volume test

Republic Services RSG research note graphic with a collection-route illustration and third-quarter revenue, margin, and volume metrics.

Republic Services came out of its third-quarter update with stronger revenue, profitability and full-year expectations. Revenue increased 8.2%, adjusted EBITDA was $1.45 billion, and the adjusted EBITDA margin reached 31.8%. Management also raised its full-year ranges for revenue, adjusted EBITDA and adjusted free cash flow.

The mix behind that quarter is the central issue. Core price contributed 5.3% to revenue and average yield contributed 2.9%, while volume reduced revenue by 0.6%. That combination highlights the durability of pricing across the collection network, but it also leaves a clear question about whether physical activity can become a more balanced contributor.

Cash generation remained substantial. Through the first nine months, operating cash flow was $3.52 billion and adjusted free cash flow was $2.28 billion. Those figures matter because Republic Services is balancing investment, capital returns and debt service while continuing to integrate acquisitions. Long-term debt stood at $14.007 billion at September 30, compared with $92 million of cash.

The market response added another layer. RSG finished October 30 at $244.04, less than 2% below its 52-week high and above both its 50-day and 200-day averages. The operating record remains resilient, yet the share price leaves less room for ordinary execution misses. Future evidence should show whether margin strength can persist as volume, integration and financing conditions evolve.

For readers following the business, the next useful checkpoints are practical rather than predictive: the pace of volume contribution, the durability of adjusted margin, cash conversion against the raised range, and the deployment of the repurchase authorization after it becomes effective in January 2027. Together, those measures should clarify whether recent pricing strength is translating into broader operating momentum.
