Range Resources Research Note: Production Discipline Meets an October 27 Test

Range Resources enters its October 27 third-quarter release with a clear tension between operating discipline and commodity exposure. The latest complete quarter combined higher production with balance-sheet capacity, yet earnings and unit costs did not move in the same direction. That contrast makes the upcoming update a test of execution rather than a referendum on one figure.

Second-quarter production averaged 2.30 Bcfe per day, about 5% above the prior-year period, and natural gas represented roughly 67% of output. Operating cash flow was $235 million while capital spending was $222 million. These readings show meaningful scale, but the next report needs to connect volume with realized pricing and cash conversion.

Financial capacity provides room to absorb volatility. Net debt was approximately $881 million at June 30, and available credit stood at $1.5 billion. Still, second-quarter net income declined to $195.3 million from $237.6 million a year earlier. Direct operating expense and general-and-administrative expense per mcfe also increased, keeping cost control central to the evidence.

The business is concentrated in Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale, and the company says natural gas, NGL and oil prices materially affect revenue, cash flow, economic production, proved reserves and financing capacity. Its year-end 2025 proved reserves were 18.1 Tcfe, with 71% developed. Resource depth and liquidity can support continuity, but neither removes commodity, infrastructure or regional risk.

Third-quarter results are scheduled after New York Stock Exchange trading closes on October 27, followed by a conference call at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time on October 28. The most useful reading will connect production, realizations, operating costs and capital spending, while checking whether final derivative information changes the preliminary picture.
