Encompass Health Corporation Research Note: New Capacity Puts Operating Quality in Focus

Encompass Health Corporation approaches its October 28 update with a credible operating story and a sharper test of execution. Second-quarter revenue increased 9.6% to $1,597.4 million, adjusted EBITDA increased 9.2% to $348.0 million, total discharges rose 5.6%, and same-store discharges increased 2.8%. The combination shows that recent growth came from both patient activity and revenue per discharge.

October added a fresh layer to that story. The Bangor hospital opened on October 6, and Westover Hills opened on October 22. Each inpatient rehabilitation hospital has 50 beds. The openings extend capacity, but opening dates alone do not show how quickly referrals, census and staffing can reach efficient levels.

Cash conversion and labor discipline make that ramp worth watching. Adjusted free cash flow declined 4.8% in the second quarter even as adjusted EBITDA advanced. Salaries and benefits equaled 51.4% of revenue. Together, those figures make the balance between operating growth, staffing costs and cash generation as important as the added capacity.

Reimbursement remains another operating variable. Traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage represented about 81.8% of second-quarter revenue. Company disclosures identify reimbursement changes, authorization practices and referral development as material considerations while new facilities build local patient flows.

The next release can provide a more complete view by connecting updated full-year guidance with same-store discharge growth, revenue per discharge, staffing intensity and adjusted cash conversion. Commentary on census development at recently opened hospitals can also distinguish a normal early ramp from a broader change in operating quality. A mixed result would keep the growth narrative under review rather than settle it.
