COST Research Note — Durability Faces a Cost Test

CAMS — COST Research Note July 28, 2026
CAMS — COST Research Note July 28, 2026

Costco's membership engine remains unusually durable, but slowing comparable sales and fresh tariff pressure make the next evidence window more demanding. Renewal above 92%, growing executive membership and strong digital demand support the franchise case. The counterweight is a premium valuation that leaves little room for ordinary execution.

The next monthly sales release and September results should clarify whether traffic and fee economics can offset import-cost pressure. Merchandise margins, private-label sourcing commentary and the composition of comparable-sales growth matter more than the headline alone.

The full Level 2+ review maps the internal debate, fundamentals ledger, valuation scenarios, market structure, catalyst calendar and invalidation conditions. Read the gated COST Deep Coverage Review or join CAMS Premium Research.
