Good morning.

Crude oil jumped about 4% and long Treasury yields climbed before the opening bell, pulling stock futures lower and putting energy inflation back at the center of the premarket.

At six oh nine Eastern, S and P 500 futures were down 0.41%.

Nasdaq 100 futures were down 0.58%, and Dow futures were down 0.79%.

A few minutes later, the 10-year Treasury yield was about 5.35%, above its prior close.

West Texas Intermediate crude was near $92 a barrel.

Brent was near $104 a barrel.

The energy fund gained 1.23% before the market, while the semiconductor fund fell 1.33%.

Wednesday's session had already shown a weaker broad tape.

The S and P 500 and Nasdaq Composite each lost 0.22%, while the Russell 2000 fell 1.31%.

Ten of eleven tracked sector funds closed lower, with health care the only positive group.

The Federal Reserve minutes said most participants thought another rate increase would likely be appropriate by year-end.

Treasury demand faces another test today with a reopening of 30-year bonds.

Oil supply risk included attacks on Gulf shipping and production shutdowns tied to a tropical storm.

Samsung estimated about 107.4 trillion won in third-quarter operating profit and 195 trillion won in sales, yet its shares fell in Asia.

The result arrived while the broader technology trade faced higher energy costs and borrowing rates.

The opening will show whether energy can hold its premarket strength without another leg higher in yields.
