CAMS Morning Market Brief: October 23, 2026

Oil is the morning's pressure point, with W T I crude up 1.57% at $101.03 a barrel.

Good morning. This is the CAMS Morning Market Brief for Friday, October 23, 2026.

Oil is the morning's pressure point, with W T I crude up 1.57% at $101.03 a barrel. Nasdaq 100 futures were nearly flat, while S and P 500 futures were down 0.19% and Dow futures were down 0.55%.

Thursday's completed session was sharply split. The S and P 500 lost 1.21%, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 2.60%. The Dow finished just above flat, while the Russell 2000 gained 0.11%. Equal-weighted shares rose even as the cap-weighted index fell, which points to a narrow retreat centered on large growth stocks.

Consumer staples, health care, financials, real estate and utilities gained. Technology fell 3.29%, and the semiconductor fund fell 5.99%. Trading in the S and P fund ran above its recent average, so the weakness was not a thin-volume move.

The 10-year Treasury yield was 4.978% before the bell. The VIX was 19.58. Brent crude was $114.32 a barrel, while gold slipped to about $4,037 an ounce.

Reuters said the global technology retreat eased overnight after concern about the funding needs of artificial intelligence drove Thursday's decline. Oil did not ease. Fresh Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia kept the market focused on possible Middle East supply disruption. The extent of any actual disruption and the time needed to restore affected operations remain uncertain.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has no scheduled release today. The Federal Reserve calendar has no policy decision or public speech today, with the next F O M C decision due October 28.

American Express and S L B both plan to release quarterly results before the opening bell.

RingCentral reported $676 million in quarterly revenue, up 5.9%, and raised its full-year outlook. Its shares were up 17.10% before the bell. Deckers reported record quarterly revenue of $1.481 billion and raised its full-year earnings outlook, but its shares were down 8.30% before the bell.

The CAMS Radar produced nine preliminary research candidates. Its sector tape ranked energy, health care and consumer staples at the top, while technology and communication services remained weak over the shorter windows. These names are research leads, not completed trade decisions.

The opening test is whether stable technology futures can hold while crude stays above $100. If oil keeps climbing and technology cannot recover, the defensive rotation may remain in control. If crude cools and market breadth stays firm, pressure on the large growth complex could ease.
