Nasdaq futures led a split premarket while weak small-cap futures, soft prior breadth and a sharp oil rise argued for confirmation after the open.
Good morning. This is the CAMS Morning Market Brief for Monday, August 31, 2026, prepared shortly after 8:15 Eastern.
The premarket picture was split. S&P 500 futures were near 7,708, up about 0.2 percent. Nasdaq 100 futures were near 29,465, higher by about 0.6 percent. Dow futures were nearly unchanged, while Russell 2000 futures were down about 1.1 percent. That gap showed early strength concentrated in large growth stocks rather than a broad risk-on move.
The prior Nasdaq breadth reading was also soft. Declining issues outnumbered advancers 4,041 to 2,453, and advancing volume was about 81 percent of declining volume. That did not invalidate the positive Nasdaq futures move, but it raised the bar for confirmation after the opening bell.
Cross-asset markets carried a clear inflation and rate signal. West Texas Intermediate crude was near 86 dollars and 11 cents, up about 4.7 percent. The dollar index was up about 0.4 percent near 99.54, while gold fell about 1.9 percent to roughly 4,509 dollars. The VIX was near 15.3. Higher oil and a firmer dollar created a less forgiving backdrop for smaller companies and rate-sensitive groups, even with Nasdaq futures positive.
The morning question was whether large-cap technology could hold its lead after the opening. Better breadth and steadier small caps were needed for confirmation. If the Russell stayed weak while oil and yields pressed higher, the tape would remain narrower than the Nasdaq headline suggested.
The official Nasdaq calendar showed a normal trading day. The retained morning research did not confirm a new market-wide operational disruption that met the CAMS publication standard before recording.
The setup favored a selective open, not a blanket bullish reading. Large growth futures were firm, but small caps and breadth were warning that participation mattered.
