CAMS Morning Market Brief — August 20, 2026

Weaker futures, technology pressure, firm oil and gold, Walmart guidance, and the Marvell-Google agreement define the morning risk map.

CAMS Morning Market Brief for Thursday, August 20, 2026.

U.S. equity futures point to a risk-off open. At roughly 8:15 Eastern, S&P 500 futures were near 7,692, Nasdaq 100 futures near 29,304, Dow futures near 53,160, and Russell 2000 futures near 3,020. All four were below the prior futures close, with technology showing the clearest pressure. The CAMS futures model also places both micro Nasdaq and micro Dow futures below their lower Magic Lines and below their 15-minute 200-period exponential moving averages. That structure is bearish, but both contracts are extended away from their reference lines, so confirmation at the open matters more than the overnight move alone.

Wednesday's cash session had already shown a split tape. The S&P 500 closed at 7,707.98, up about two-tenths of one percent, while the Dow gained about two-tenths, the Nasdaq Composite added about two-tenths, and the Russell 2000 rose about one-half percent. Equal weight outperformed the capitalization-weighted S&P 500, but technology fell about 1.1 percent while health care gained about 3.5 percent and consumer staples gained about 1.1 percent. Volume in the S&P 500 data set rose to roughly 5.18 billion shares from 4.60 billion the prior session. The important question this morning is whether defensive and equal-weight resilience can persist while futures weaken.

Cross-asset signals are not fully aligned. The volatility index is near 15.6, up from 14.9. The ten-year Treasury yield proxy is around 4.65 percent. The dollar index is near 98.8. West Texas Intermediate crude is around 87 dollars and 20 cents, while gold is near 4,511 dollars. Firm oil and gold alongside weaker equity futures suggest that inflation, geopolitics, and duration risk remain active rather than resolved.

The July Federal Reserve minutes showed inflation risks skewed to the upside and broader support for tighter policy than markets had assumed. Initial jobless claims and the Philadelphia Federal Reserve manufacturing survey are scheduled after this recording. Rate-sensitive growth leadership will therefore need confirmation from yields as well as price.

Company catalysts are substantial. Walmart reported 5.9 percent revenue growth and roughly 17 percent adjusted operating-income growth in constant currency, with 750 basis points of that profit growth attributed to tariff refunds. Walmart U.S. comparable sales excluding fuel rose 2.6 percent, and management raised full-year sales and operating-income growth guidance. The result supports the defensive retail story, but the tariff-refund contribution reduces the repeatability of the headline profit growth.

Marvell disclosed an expanded Google custom-silicon agreement and a warrant covering as many as 58,970,907 shares at 206 dollars and 58 cents, with most vesting tied to Google purchases through fiscal 2033. This is a meaningful validation of Marvell's custom artificial-intelligence platform, while also introducing dilution and customer-concentration questions. Broadcom is the clearest competitive read-through, but the exact share shift has not been disclosed.

The main incident lane remains the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping traffic and export flows have not fully normalized, and crude remains elevated. CAMS found no separately confirmed new fab fire, utility failure, cyber outage, port shutdown, recall, supplier shutdown, or critical-supplier disruption that met the publication standard before this recording.

For the opening hour, CAMS is monitoring whether Nasdaq futures recover twenty-nine thousand three hundred seventy-six and whether Dow futures recover fifty-three thousand three hundred eleven, whether the volatility index holds above 15, whether oil extends above 87 dollars, and whether health care and staples continue to lead. A failure to recover those futures reference levels would confirm the overnight defensive tone. A recovery accompanied by easing yields and broader participation would contradict it.
