Good afternoon.

The Nasdaq is leading the midday rally, but the market underneath is less convincing.

At eleven fifty-three Eastern, the Nasdaq Composite was up about 1.1%.

The S and P 500 was up about 0.6%.

The Dow was nearly flat, while the Russell Two Thousand was up about 0.3% on its latest quote.

Breadth has not caught up. Nasdaq's broad stock screener showed 3,794 decliners and 2,707 advancers.

Technology led with a gain of about 1.2%. Energy and communication services were also higher, while consumer staples and financials were among the laggards.

The morning inflation report gave growth shares some room. The PCE price index rose 0.3% in August, below the consensus estimate.

Core PCE rose 0.2% for the month.

The bond market is not fully confirming that relief. The ten-year Treasury yield was near 5.29%, back near its session high.

West Texas Intermediate crude was near $92 a barrel.

This is a strong index tape with narrow participation and renewed pressure from rates and oil. A healthier afternoon would pair continued index strength with broader participation and a cooler ten-year yield.

Micron reports after the close, so the semiconductor group still has a company-specific catalyst ahead.
