Good afternoon.

Both official Nasdaq calendars support a regular United States trading session today.

Near noon, United States stocks were lower and headed toward a fourth straight decline. The S and P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were each down about 0.4%, while the Dow was lower by 226 points.

The weakness was broad enough to matter. Earlier, declining stocks led by 1.84 to one on the New York Stock Exchange and 1.73 to one on the Nasdaq. The Nasdaq had recorded 17 new highs and 103 new lows.

Oil and long-term yields remain at the center of the tape. Brent crude moved above $105 a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate moved above $100. The ten-year Treasury yield was near 5.10%, while the thirty-year yield was near 5.43%.

That combination keeps inflation and borrowing costs in focus. Technology led the early decline, while energy gained about 1%.

Two fresh economic reports added to the case for a firm economy. Initial jobless claims fell by 1,000 to 197,000, below the 201,000 consensus estimate. New home sales rose to an annual rate of 684,000 in August, up 6.4% from the revised July pace. The report also showed 8.5 months of supply and a median sales price of $393,700.

Those data do not settle the inflation debate, but they offer little evidence of an abrupt economic slowdown.

Company news brought two specific catalysts. Lilly said the Food and Drug Administration approved Onswik, its once-weekly basal insulin for adults with type 2 diabetes. United States availability is expected in the coming months. Vertiv filed an agreement to acquire King Environmental Services. The company expects the deal to close in the fourth quarter and did not disclose a transaction value.

The afternoon test is whether oil and long-term yields retreat while market breadth improves. If those pressures stay elevated, rate-sensitive growth shares remain the vulnerable part of the market. A recovery in breadth with lower energy prices would make the tape more stable, but that confirmation was not present near noon.
