CAMS Market Check.
Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
Good afternoon.
Both official Nasdaq calendars support a regular United States trading session today.
Near noon, the tape was split rather than uniformly strong.
The Nasdaq Composite was up about 0.2% at 27,176.
It had set an intraday record earlier in the session.
The S and P 500 was roughly flat near 7,758.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down about 0.6%, while the Russell 2000 was up about 0.3%.
That mix kept leadership tilted toward growth without turning the whole market lower.
Earlier breadth was positive, with advancers ahead of decliners by 1.62 to one on the New York Stock Exchange and 2.02 to one on the Nasdaq.
Reuters reported that Alphabet helped communication services lead early.
The major benchmarks were not moving together.
The cross-asset signal was also mixed.
The ten-year Treasury yield was about 4.97%, just under 5%.
The V I X was near 14.4, down from 14.87 at the prior close.
West Texas Intermediate crude was near $92 a barrel, while Brent was close to $100.
Reuters reported that Saudi Arabia restarted operations at its East-West Pipeline while possible United States and Iran talks remained in focus.
The pipeline restart eased one immediate supply concern, but Brent near $100 showed that energy risk had not cleared.
Fresh economic data were softer.
The Richmond Fed manufacturing index fell to negative 2 from 4 in August.
Shipments dropped to negative 5 and new orders to negative 6, while employment rose to 7.
That is a regional factory survey, not a national reading, but it added a weaker demand signal to the session.
AutoZone reported fourth-quarter sales of $6.6 billion, up 5.6%, with constant-currency same-store sales up 1.5%.
Its gross margin received material help from tariff refunds and accounting for inventory costs, so the composition of the result matters.
The afternoon test is whether Nasdaq strength can hold while the Dow stabilizes and the ten-year yield stays below 5%.
Positive breadth would help the split market hold together.
A move in the ten-year yield above 5% or a sharp rebound in crude would put more pressure on rate-sensitive shares.
