Good afternoon.

Both official Nasdaq calendars support a regular United States trading session today.

Hiring slowed more than economists expected. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said payrolls rose by 29,000 in September. The unemployment rate was 4.2%. Economists polled by Reuters had expected 90,000 jobs.

Stocks were higher late this morning. The S and P 500 was up about 0.7%. The Nasdaq Composite was up about 1.2%, and the Dow was up about 0.3%. The latest Russell 2000 reading showed a gain of about 1.1%.

Reuters said most major S and P sectors were higher. Consumer discretionary and technology led, while health care lagged. Semiconductor shares led the advance.

The bond response became less settled. The 10-year Treasury yield fell after the jobs report but later rose above its prior close. That reversal leaves rates as the main test for the afternoon advance.

Oil remained lower. West Texas Intermediate crude was near $90.27 a barrel, and Brent was near $100.78.

Nike was down about 5.8% after Reuters reported a steep annual revenue decline forecast and job cuts.

The softer labor data helped risk appetite, but the rebound in yields argues for a measured read on the rally.
