At eleven fifty-four Eastern, the S and P 500 was down 0.34%, the Nasdaq Composite was down 0.41%, and the Dow was down 0.53%.
The Russell 2000 was down 0.43% on its latest quote.
The Nasdaq screener showed 3,975 decliners and 2,542 advancers, so the weakness extends beyond the largest indexes.
The ten-year Treasury yield was about 5.25% after reaching a session high near 5.34%, and the V I X was 17.27.
Fresh factory data kept inflation risk in focus.
The Institute for Supply Management's September manufacturing index registered 54.5, while its prices index reached 77.9.
S and P Global's separate manufacturing index rose to 55.9, its strongest reading since May 2022.
West Texas Intermediate crude was $92.53 a barrel, up 2.33%, and energy led the tracked sector groups with a 1.48% gain.
Reuters reported that Chinese refiners suspended oil-product exports beyond Hong Kong and Macau, while several PetroChina cargoes planned for October were canceled.
It remained unclear whether permission would resume after the holiday ends on October 7.
Semiconductors were up 0.20%, but technology overall was little changed.
Initial jobless claims were 197,000, below the 200,000 estimate cited by Yahoo Finance.
For the afternoon, steadier rates and improving breadth would support a more durable rebound.
Without both, the pressure from input costs and tight financial conditions remains unresolved.
