Technology-led selling collides with powerful healthcare, energy, gold, and equal-weight resilience in an unusually divided midday tape.
This is the CAMS Midday Market Check for Friday, August twenty-first, twenty twenty-six.
The midday tape is decisively risk-off, but the selling is not uniform. At approximately twelve thirty Eastern, the S and P 500 was down about one point three percent. The Dow was lower by roughly one percent. The Nasdaq Composite was down about two percent, and the Russell 2000 was lower by roughly one point eight percent. The Nasdaq one hundred proxy was weaker still, down about two point four percent.
Market structure shows a sharp rotation away from growth and cyclicality rather than an indiscriminate liquidation. The equal-weight S and P proxy was down only about four tenths of one percent, substantially better than the capitalization-weighted index. Technology was the weakest major sector, lower by about three and a half percent. Industrials were down about three point four percent. By contrast, healthcare was up about four point six percent, energy gained about three point one percent, and materials rose nearly one point nine percent. Healthcare therefore remains both the strongest medium-term CAMS Radar sector and the clearest intraday defensive leader.
Volume confirms that this is a consequential session. By midday, S and P proxy volume was already about sixty-six million shares, while Nasdaq one hundred proxy volume was roughly two hundred thirty-five million shares. The combination of heavy growth-stock volume and material equal-weight outperformance says the headline indexes are being pulled lower by concentrated pressure in large technology names.
The cross-asset picture is unusually divided. The ten-year Treasury yield proxy was near four point seven four percent, slightly above Thursday's level. The dollar index was down about eight tenths of one percent. Gold futures were up about five point eight percent near four thousand six hundred seventy-five dollars, while crude oil was up about two and a half percent near eighty-six dollars and sixty-three cents. The VIX was only modestly higher near fifteen point three. That limited volatility response is not confirming panic, even though index and commodity moves are large. CAMS is monitoring whether volatility catches up during the afternoon or whether sector rotation continues to absorb the pressure.
Company dispersion is also extreme. Nvidia was down about four point three percent ahead of its August twenty-six earnings report. Advanced Micro Devices was lower by about eight point seven percent, Broadcom by about six and a half percent, and CrowdStrike by about eleven point seven percent. Walmart extended its post-earnings decline to roughly ten point seven percent despite its SEC-filed release showing higher full-year guidance. Marvell moved the other way, rising about five point six percent as the market continued to digest its SEC-confirmed expanded Google custom-silicon agreement.
There is no major BLS or BEA release scheduled today. The next major event cluster includes several technology reports on August twenty-six, followed by the Jackson Hole symposium from August twenty-seventh through August twenty-ninth. Treasury's announced increase in long-end liquidity-support buybacks begins in September, but today's elevated long yield shows that fiscal-supply concerns have not disappeared from the tape.
CAMS incident screening checked manufacturing and fab disruptions, power and utility failures, cyber and cloud outages, ports and logistics, strikes, recalls, sanctions, export controls, and critical supplier shocks. No newly confirmed operational disruption met the evidence and materiality standard for this edition. Nvidia's newly confirmed strategic partnership with data-center power developer Cloverleaf is a capacity-development catalyst, not a current outage; financial terms remain undisclosed.
For the afternoon, the key confirmation levels are market-wide rather than personalized. Continued equal-weight resilience, healthcare and energy leadership, and a VIX that remains contained would support a rotation interpretation. A renewed decline in equal weight, a material VIX expansion, or further deterioration in semiconductors would point to broader risk reduction. The CAMS futures report also shows Nasdaq micro futures below their fifteen-minute two-hundred-period average while Dow micro futures remain above theirs, reinforcing a mixed internal structure beneath weak headline indexes.
