This is the CAMS Midday Market Check for Monday, July 27th.

Stocks are mixed at midday. The S&P 500 is essentially flat, off six hundredths of a percent. The Nasdaq 100 is lagging, down about half a percent, while the Dow is higher by roughly four tenths of a percent and the small-cap Russell 2000 is outperforming, up about half a percent.

Breadth inside the Dow tells an interesting story. Twenty-three of the thirty components are advancing, against just seven declining. Salesforce is the standout, up close to seven percent, followed by Sherwin-Williams and 3M with solid gains. On the other side, Nvidia is the heaviest drag, down more than four and a half percent, with Dow Inc and Caterpillar also under pressure.

Sector rotation shows a defensive-meets-cyclical tilt. Communication Services leads the market, up close to one and three quarters percent, with Consumer Staples and Consumer Discretionary also higher. Energy is the weakest sector, down about a percent and a half, with Technology and Utilities also lagging. Six of eleven sectors are in the green, five in the red.

The VIX is up nearly three percent, just above nineteen, a modest pickup in hedging demand even as the major averages hold close to unchanged.

Looking ahead, the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting kicks off Wednesday, with the rate decision due Thursday. That's the next major item on this week's calendar.
