CAMS Closing Market Recap.
Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Good evening.
Both official Nasdaq calendars confirm that today was a regular United States trading session.
The late recovery was the story. After Reuters reported that United States and Iranian negotiators were exploring a phased path out of war, the S and P 500 and Nasdaq erased nearly all of their losses. No agreement had been announced by the close.
The S and P 500 finished near 7,704, down 0.02%. The Nasdaq Composite closed near 26,939, up 0.01%. The Dow fell 0.31% to 51,350, while the Russell 2000 slipped 0.08% to 2,836.
Breadth told a less reassuring story. The official Nasdaq screener showed 2,681 decliners against 975 advancers on Nasdaq. New York Stock Exchange listings had 2,096 decliners against 539 advancers. Cboe reported about 26.47 billion shares of consolidated volume.
Communication services, health care, and energy led the sector ETF map. Materials, utilities, and consumer staples lagged.
Oil and long-term yields kept the inflation question alive. Brent crude was near $107.43 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate was near $95.27. The ten-year Treasury yield was near 5.16%, and the dollar index was near 101.27. The V I X closed near 15.55. Gold futures were near $4,308 an ounce.
The economic data stayed firm. Initial jobless claims fell to 197,000, below the 201,000 consensus estimate. August new home sales ran at an annual rate of 684,000. New York Fed President John Williams said another rate increase before year-end was a reasonable possibility, while stressing that policymakers still need the incoming data.
Company news split sharply. Lilly rose 2.85% after announcing United States approval for Onswik, its once-weekly basal insulin for adults with type 2 diabetes. Oracle fell 3.49% after a report about a force-majeure notice tied to Project Jupiter. Oracle said the project remained on schedule, and Blue Owl said its financial commitments were unchanged.
The Associated Press reported that a Saudi military spokesperson said six ballistic missiles targeting Yanbu and Taif were intercepted. Later Houthi claims about Jazan were not independently confirmed by the Associated Press.
The close looked calm at the index level, but weak breadth, Brent above $107, and the ten-year yield above 5% kept the underlying risk picture tense. Broader participation, lower crude, and lower yields would make that recovery more convincing.
