Stocks ended modestly higher after a rough trip through the bond market.
CAMS Closing Market Recap.
Thursday, October 1, 2026.
Good evening.
Stocks ended modestly higher after a rough trip through the bond market. The S and P 500 finished at 7,666. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 26,872, while the Dow reached 50,927. The Russell Two Thousand rose to 2,810.
The index gains hid a weak session underneath. Nasdaq's after-close screener showed 2,114 decliners against 1,520 advancers. New York Stock Exchange listings had 1,703 decliners and 912 advancers. Listed-share volume was about 8.1 billion on Nasdaq and about 5.8 billion in New York.
Energy led the sector board. Semiconductors and technology also rose, while health care and communication services fell.
The 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.344% before easing to 5.239%. The 2-year yield finished near 4.79%. That late retreat in yields helped stocks recover from their lows.
Oil kept the inflation question alive. West Texas Intermediate crude finished at $93.30 a barrel, up about 3.2%, while Brent reached about $103, up about 4.7%. Gold ended near $4,207, and the dollar index rose to 102.04. The V I X was little changed at 16.42.
Factory data sent a mixed message. The I S M manufacturing index registered 54.5, but its prices index jumped to 77.9. S and P Global's factory index reached 55.9.
Federal Reserve Vice Chair Philip Jefferson said inflation is still too high. He also said the next policy judgment may take more time as officials weigh the data and the balance of risks.
Accenture jumped 15.78% after its quarterly results topped estimates and management forecast continued revenue growth. Micron rose 3.03% after reporting record quarterly revenue and giving first-quarter revenue guidance.
The closing read is less comfortable than the green index numbers suggest. Falling yields rescued the major averages, but weak breadth and a sharp oil rise kept inflation and market concentration in focus.
