BlackBerry Research Note: Growth Improved, September 24 Tests Durability

Editorial evidence map for BlackBerry showing QNX and Secure Communications revenue growth converging on a September 24 durability test, with retention, cash conversion, and guidance checkpoints.

BlackBerry arrives at its September 24 fiscal second-quarter update with broader operating progress than an old turnaround label might suggest. Fiscal first-quarter revenue rose 26% from a year earlier to $152.9 million, GAAP gross margin reached 78.3%, and GAAP operating income was $15.3 million. Both principal businesses contributed, making the durability of the improvement the central question rather than whether one isolated product created the headline.

QNX revenue advanced 26% to $72.3 million, supported by an 86% adjusted gross margin and $19.3 million of segment adjusted EBITDA. Secure Communications revenue increased 24% to $73.6 million and produced $20.2 million of segment adjusted EBITDA. That breadth matters, but it does not settle quality. Secure Communications annual recurring revenue was $220 million while dollar-based net retention was 92%, indicating that the prior customer cohort still contracted.

Cash conversion adds another test. Operating cash flow was positive at $4.6 million in fiscal Q1, yet the fiscal-year outlook near $100 million requires much stronger conversion during the remaining quarters. Customer concentration also deserves attention because one customer represented 13% of fiscal Q1 revenue and two customers each exceeded 10% of accounts receivable.

The September 24 release can clarify whether growth remains shared across QNX and Secure Communications, whether retention stabilizes, and whether accounting improvement converts into cash. Revenue and adjusted EBITDA within the company's prior fiscal Q2 ranges would keep the transformation credible, but the mix of results may be more informative than the headline totals. Receivables, deferred revenue, customer economics, and any change to fiscal-year guidance will help distinguish repeatable progress from quarterly timing.
