Apple Applies for Patent to Protect Dropped iPhone

Apple Inc. (AAPL, quote) watches today are pointing to a patent the focuses on protecting components of the iPhone such as the glass screen if the phone happen to be dropped.

3485195_f260The patent is for a mechanism that would activate if a sensor detects the iPhone is falling.  Something my iPhone desperately needs.  The mechanism is said to shift the iPhone’s weight somehow to the center of the phone to ideally control how the phone would land and hopefully protect key components.

The patent filing appear today as “protective mechanism for an electronic device” which in brief allows the device to know whether it’s in a free fall or not and how far it’s from the ground as well as the orientation in which a processor will shift a component of some weight to orchestrate a preferred landing.

This is the second patent to appear for Apple in the last 30 days with the prior patient titled “situational awareness” which enables the device to perform particular tasks automatically based a situation.

There’s been a lot of talk on whether Apple lost is mojo but these two patents do shed some light on some possible exciting features for Apple devices. The question is can Apple provide that WOW factor once again and set itself apart once again.
